OldUnreal takes over maintenance of the UT99 code base

Recently announced, OldUnreal (known for their maintenance of the original Unreal code base for many years) have reached an agreement with Epic to take over maintenance of the UT99 code base.

This is exciting news, we can now expect patches (no ETA) which will make the game easier to run on newer systems.

Additionally there is work being completed to implement much needed security updates into the code base.

Based on the information available we can expect,

  • Support for (minimum) Pentium 4 machine running either Windows XP, a Linux distribution with glibc 2.19 or greater, Mac OS X 10.7, or macOS.
  • Security enhancements
  • Performance improvements
  • New public headers
  • Backwards compatibility with original games
  • Compatibility with existing mods, although some might need to be recompiled.
  • Continued compatibility with custom renders, (UTGLR packaged)
  • Update to UnrealEd

According to the announcement on the OldUnreal forums, Stacey Conley (@Flak) was instrumental in getting this across the line and we thank her for her work.

Interesting times ahead.

  1. This IS great news!

    I love MonsterHunt under UT99 (there’s no 2004 version) but think 99 could definitely benefit from newer textures and rendering engines.

    Roll on those MH games!
